Review

This new book about the ill-fated steamship Titanic comes with a
40-centimetre (16 inch) plastic model guaranteed to delight both history
enthusiasts and bathtub admirals. The book describes the history of the
Titanic from the laying of the keel in Belfast in 1909 to the discovery
of the rusting wreck on the Atlantic seabed in 1985. Other chapters
explore the reasons why the Titanic sank despite its many safety
features, what kinds of human error contributed to the ship’s demise,
and what scientists and shipbuilders have learned from the most famous
disaster in maritime history. The pithy, science-oriented text is
supported with many illustrations, period photos, and White Star
steamship memorabilia.

The plastic ship model accompanying the book is easy to assemble and
made of high-quality plastic that will not scuff bathroom enamel. The
model floats like the original, and, when the owner so chooses, he or
she can re-enact the “Night to Remember” by opening an iceberg gash
on the starboard bow, which causes the model to flood and eventually
sink just like the real thing. As a bonus, the model actually splits in
half and sinks in two sections, bow first followed by the stern a few
seconds later. Unlike the original, this Titanic can be drained out,
reassembled and sunk all over again. Any young Titanic fan will love
this fun and informative book and model set. Highly recommended.
