Review

It was not the biggest dinosaur ever discovered. It was not the fastest
either. Nor was it the smartest, strongest, or even the most bizarre
fossil reptile ever found. So why is the seventh instalment of the
highly successful Tiny Perfect Dinosaur series devoted to the humble
hypacrosaurus, who lived in the Late Cretaceous period? Because it was a
good mother. As far as scientists know, all dinosaurs laid eggs;
however, new evidence shows that hypacrosaurus not only laid eggs but
also took care of its young hatchlings.

The complete hypacrosaurus set includes a plastic egg with a miniature
easy-to-assemble skeleton of the dinosaur plus a small but informative
book that describes what is known about this duck-billed, lizard-hipped,
two-ton vegetarian. It also includes fossil records of the dinosaur’s
skin, eggs, and nests and is very frank about what scientists don’t
know about the beast. These unanswered questions will intrigue young
readers and maybe whet their appetites for future careers in
paleontology. Nicely drawn illustrations by Ely Kish are eyecatching and
lifelike. Highly recommended.
