Review

Your Guide to Dreams adds to the spate of books on dreaming written
specifically for early adolescents. More than three-quarters of the book
is devoted to an A to Z encyclopedia of dream imagery. Common meanings
of a wide variety of dream images are provided to help readers interpret
the hidden message in their own dreams. For example, we learn that
dreaming of a storm foretells an argument in your future, while dreaming
of an oven means you are cooking up an idea.

The author begins with a brief discussion of the purpose of dreaming
and common dream themes. Unfortunately, she does not clearly explain the
sleeping–dreaming cycle, and she ignores interesting recent findings
about the function of the brain its relationship to dreaming.

If you’re looking for an introductory dictionary of dream terminology
that will help you interpret your dreams, this book may be for you; if
you’re looking for a more thorough consideration of the dream process
and your dreams, you should keep looking.
