Review

While perhaps not completely deserving of the “ultimate” label, this
book is among the best of its kind. A hockey commentator and writer,
McFarlane challenges his readers with 71 different quizzes, each of
which is organized around a theme or topic such as “They’re Paying
Him How Much?” (questions relating to players’ salaries),
“What’s the Name Again?” (given the nickname, provide the
players’ given names), “Rules in Review” (presented with a
scenario, determine the penalty), and “Famous Trades” (provided with
some clues, identify the players involved in trades). While most of the
questions relate to the more recent history of the NHL, McFarlane does
not forget the league’s past players and teams.

Quizzes are presented in a variety of formats, including open-ended
questions, multiple choice, true/false statements, and matching. The
author also incorporates some quizzes whose contents relate to the WHA
and junior and international hockey. Most unusual is his inclusion of a
few logic problems set in a hockey context. Answers are provided either
immediately following each individual question or at the end of a quiz
segment. Eight black-and-white, full-page action photos of NHL stars,
past and present, are scattered throughout the book.

Both a personal and public and school library purchase, The Ultimate
Hockey Quiz Book will likely also be found in a few “beverage”
establishments where correct knowledge of its contents will determine
who buys the next round. Highly recommended.
