Review

Shooting Hoops and Skating Loops is a fascinating look at 10 inventions
in sports, the development of the various sports, and the impact of the
sport on leisure time. The sports-equipment inventions include
snowmobiles, snowshoes, laser sailboats, ice skates, and canoes and
kayaks. The sports games inventions are lacrosse, snowsnakes, hockey,
basketball, and five-pin bowling.

A reader-friendly format, complete with illustrations and sidebars, is
used to present a wealth of information. The inventions are of great
interest to Canadians, since they include the story of Armand
Bombardier, an account of the early days of hockey in Canada, and the
creation of First Nations sports (including lacrosse and snowsnakes). A
glossary and an index round out this attractive volume, which deserves a
place in public and school libraries Highly recommended.
