Review
One bright summer morning, the Mooners sleep in and Father Mooner is
going to be late for work. He asks his son, Mortimer, to make lunch
while he showers and shaves, and does whatever else pigs do to get ready
for work. Mortimer constructs a gigantic peanut butter, pickle, and
cheese sandwich while simultaneously counting down the minutes his dad
has left before he is late. His dad makes it out the front door with one
minute to spare but never quite gets to work anyway. (Buy the book and
find out why.)
Author Frank Edwards and illustrator John Bianchi are veterans of the
glory days of Harrowsmith magazine. They have since combined their
talents to create Bungalo Books. At first reading, Edwards’s prose
seems to play straightman to Bianchi’s off-beat illustrations. There
is even some educational content included, with the countdown from ten
to one displayed in both numbers and letters. Eventually the story line
also reveals that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Highly
recommended.
