Review

Donna Joe retells the Sechelt people legend honestly. Through her simple
and well-honed text, we discover how the Sechelt people learned to
follow the seasons, to gather enough food to last the winter, to
celebrate and feast in the winters, and to respect the salmon, the sea,
and the earth. Joe has made this important story (sometimes called a
creation myth) accessible. Her direct, clean writing resonates long
after one has finished reading.

Charlie Craigan’s descriptive black-and-white illustrations evoke an
earlier, simpler time. A repeated, traditional-looking salmon motif
complements the softer portrayal of the salmon people’s way of life.
Highly recommended.
