Review

This fifth volume in the StableMates series grabs and holds readers from
the first line.

Jessa, who has won a trip for two to a week of horse camp, is looking
forward to the riding lessons, where she can refine her riding skill.
But nothing is turning out as she expected. Her feuding with Rachel, the
snobbish schoolmate in the next cabin, which started out as typical
summer camp practical jokes (garter snakes in sleeping bags and elastic
bands in the chicken noodle soup), is turning dangerously mean, and Dr.
Rainey is experimenting with witchcraft.

Nikki Tate’s attention to detail, from horse knowledge to camp
warfare, gives authenticity to the story. In addition, her descriptions
are apt, capturing characters consistently, and her engaging plot moves
well, with lots of natural dialogue. Tate also skilfully introduces
folktales and nature wisdom into the story as ways of problem solving.
Whether or not you’re horse lover, whether or not you’re a preteen,
Raven’s Revenge is highly recommended.
