Review

“Dear Madam: I feel like a bit of a fool asking you to help us. I’m
afraid I don’t even know your name. But you had such a kind face when
you waited on me, and you smiled at my baby before we left your shop and
got into the boat. I could think of no one else to turn to. I think we
may be in danger. My husband’s brother is quite unwell. He has such
terrible rages. I never would have come here had I known his true
condition. I fear he might be losing his mind.”

At first, 13-year-old Jane Covington was not even sure that she wanted
to spend the summer with her grandmother Nell at her cottage on Sky
Lake. But that changed once she opened an old book and found a long
forgotten letter written in 1930. Now, she cannot rest until she finds
out what happened to the letter writer and her baby. Does the letter
have something to do with the charred house foundations sitting on top
of an isolated island cliff? Jane enlists the aid of her grandmother,
her friends Corrie and Jesse, and the local librarian to solve the
heart-rending mystery.

Peggy Dymond Leavey is a writer, librarian, historian, mother, and
grandmother. She manages to incorporate facets of all these careers into
this fine novel about a young girl who finds out who she is by
uncovering the identity of a long lost letter writer. Highly
recommended.
