Review

This beautifully designed tribute to the Group of Seven explains
different facets of their art and lives. Supplementing the very readable
text with plenty of color reproductions and photographs, the authors
answer a variety of questions (e.g., What was so different about Group
of Seven paintings?), provide biographies of each Group member, and
delve into the mystery of the death of Tom Thompson in 1917. They do a
fine job of representing the themes and ideas associated with the Group,
and they invite the reader’s participation by posing thoughtful
questions about the concepts presented. For educators, Meet the Group of
Seven is an excellent companion volume to David Booth’s Images of
Nature: Canadian Poets and the Group of Seven (1995). The book could be
used as a resource for school projects as well. Highly recommended.
