Review

Winton Runabout. Russell Torpedo. Curved Dash Oldsmobile. McLaughlin
Buick. Step-Down Hudson. Nash. Durant. Graham. Mitchell. Hyslop.
Studebaker. If any of these names suddenly cause your eyes to
inexplicably mist over, then you are probably suffering from the same
malady as author Bill Sherk. Sherk loves old automobiles and, almost as
much, old photos of them.

In this book, he presents scores of old photos of Canadians and their
cars alongside wellresearched anecdotes that will fascinate any
automobile history fan. For example, there is a 1914 picture of two
sombre-faced men in top

hats and Edwardian suits sitting in a little cycle-car described by
Sherk as a cross between a motorcycle and a car. The car belongs to the
Rev. J.D. Morrow, the minister of a Toronto church. There are also
photos of car wrecks, old trucks, military vehicles, gas stations,
parking lots, car washes, traffic jams, and just about any auto-related
subject.

Sherk has gathered the photos from coast to coast and has an excellent
eye for human-interest details. He also has a wonderful gift for
storytelling. So if you love old cars or great stories about them, 60
Years Behind the Wheel should be on your reading list.
