Review

This must-have handbook for teachers of children in the primary grades
articulates sound pedagogy about how children learn to read, offers
details about what should be found in libraries serving children, and
includes lessons describing how to proceed and a wonderful bibliography
based on the process of learning. For beginning teachers unsure how to
explore books with reluctant readers, the book includes guided-reading
lesson plans, suggested activities, plans for conferencing with the
young reader, and case studies featuring beginning readers and their
teachers. The sequential organization of works in the
bibliography—concepts, alphabet, patterns, taking off, first
novels—leads a child through the steps that engage the reading
experience.

Better Books! Better Readers! presents a literacy program that will
inspire in young people a zest for learning and a love of reading.
Highly recommended.
