Larger Than Life

Bert Almon is a professor of English at the University of Alberta. He is
the author of Calling Texas, Earth Prime, and Mind the Gap.

This anthology has an interesting premise—the poems are about
celebrities. Some of the poets are celebrities themselves in the
subculture of contemporary Canadian poetry: Barry Dempster, Colin
Morton, Kate Braid, John B. Lee. Jay Ruzesky contributes some rather
flat poems about James Dean. Several poems by the little-known Myrna
Garanis show a keen eye for character. Most of the poems are a very easy
and colloquial free verse in short and glib lines. The anthology is
strong on concept and weak on realization.
