Review

Robert Priest is a well-known Canadian poet, songwriter, and playwright
who has taught for over 20 years in primary and secondary schools and
universities throughout Canada and England. Blue Pyramids, a collection
of poems, songs, and aphorisms (both new and old), serves as a good
introduction to his style, wit, and gift for making the mundane seem not
so mundane. Lines like “Whitewash comes in many colours” and
“Clothes make the man—poor” testify to his ability to make the
reader laugh and think at the same time.

Blue Pyramids includes the musical notations for several of Priests’s
songs, making it possible for those musically inclined to play his work
as well as read it. His music is catchy and timeless, appealing to
people of all ages. Some of his songs have even made their way to Sesame
Street.

Whether the subject is parenthood, love, politics, or religion, Priest
approaches life with joy. His ability to play with words, wringing out
their very essence, makes him a pleasure to read.
