Review

The first two editions of this book were written by Peter Jowett, a
former Nahanni Park warden. This third edition is updated by Neil
Hartling, a Nahanni outfitter and guide.

Nahanni River Guide is an essential resource for travellers intent on
paddling the river. The first section of the guide, “Before You
Leave,” discusses trip planning (trip length, canoe rental, weather,
gear), as well as how to get there and back, and offers valuable travel
tips about canoe safety, drinking water, and bears, among other things.
The second section, “River Description,” provides detailed
information about the river, emphasizes its scenic attractions, outlines
hiking options, features numerous black-and-white photographs, and is
linked to the “Maps” section. “The Nahanni Story” describes the
park’s natural and human history, and points out its unique features.

This is an absolute gem of a book. If you intend to go it alone, or
with a group or an outfitter, this guide covers virtually everything you
need to know about the Nahanni National Park Reserve. It will serve as
the foundation for planning a safe and unforgettable trip down the
Nahanni River.
