Review

Chris Hyndman and Steven Sabados, the “Designer Guys” of the popular
television show of that name, believe that everyone has a personal
style—“an expression of who you are.” Their aim on their show and
in this book is to give you the confidence to discover your personal
style and learn how to express it. Their approach to style includes
everything from clothes, cars, and furniture to favourite food—in sum,
many of the things that make us individuals.

The book is attractively designed with large colour illustrations. In
it they provide the dos and don’ts about stylistic choices, a top 10
list of decorating tips, a list of personal style secrets, tips on
collecting artwork, a discussion of feng shui techniques, and examples
of other people’s dilemmas. They also feature 12 design makeovers,
each of which corresponds to specific clients they’ve helped who have
different needs (e.g., the family, the young urban male, the collector,
the dog lover, the renovator).

Anyone who has watched their popular television show will recognize the
clients and the step-by-step makeovers presented. Though some readers
may be disappointed by the repetition, others will appreciate the
opportunity to study the authors’ advice closely. Their approach
emphasizes a happy, feel-good style of decorating, and it is sure to be
pleasing to many people looking to refine their stylistic choices.
