Review

Both of these volumes are designed to encourage extended discussion
among a wide range of moviegoers (students, teachers, family members,
friends, etc.).

The movies in volume 1 are grouped according to topics of Growing Up,
Family, Society, The Mind, Dreams, Life and Death, The Arts, The Media,
and The Weird and Wacky, with discussion of such gems as To Kill a
Mockingbird, Kramer vs. Kramer, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Dr. Strangelove,
and West Side Story. Survival, Heroes, World Conflict, World History,
North American History, Nature, Religion, The Future, and Fantasy are
the themes of volume 2, which examines The African Queen, Shane, A Tale
of Two Cities, Dances with Wolves, Never Cry Wolf, and The Princess
Bride, among other films.

The discussion format for each movie consists of a series of well-honed
and stimulating questions under sections titled “Talking It Over,”
“Digging into Ideas,” “Digging into Feelings,” and “Doing
Something New.” A list of additional films is included at the end of
each theme.
