Review

According to the preface, “The Who’s Who in Canadian Business is
Canada’s only comprehensive and independent biographical reference
work specifically for the business community.” The volume provides
detailed biographies and contact information for more than 5000
corporate and entrepreneurial leaders. Unlike most other biographical
collections, this one does not charge for an entry.

The information provided in the biographies includes current and past
employment, address, education, publications, favourite charities,
honours, interests, and affiliations. There is an index of individuals
by business affiliation and a short list of professional bodies and
associations. The work is available in a CD-ROM version that includes a
search engine. In either version, it serves as a quick reference for
recruiters, fundraisers, librarians, executives, and researchers.

Recently, the University of Toronto Press announced that Who’s Who in
Canadian Business would cease publication with the 24th edition.
Business leaders will still be listed in Canadian Who’s Who, which
contains over 15,000 biographies. The unwillingness of the market to
sustain Who’s Who in Canadian Business (perhaps due in part to the
fact that much of the information it contains is available on the
Internet) is a phenomenon that corporate leaders and entrepreneurs will
understand all too well.
