Review

Historian and naturalist Andrew Scott is the author of The Promise of
Paradise: Utopian Communities in B.C. and Secret Coastline: Journeys and
Discoveries Along B.C.’s Shores.

British Columbia painter and adventurer Stewart Marshall is a true
vagabond (and survivor) of the waves. He is perhaps the only living
human to have made the crossing from B.C.’s mainland to the Queen
Charlotte Islands by kayak, and several times at that! Based on
extensive interviews with Marshall, this engaging biography recounts the
artist’s solo adventures across the Pacific and along the B.C. coast
by kayak and sailboat. As we read about the close calls, as well as the
sacrifices and epiphanies, it becomes clear that Marshall’s adventures
are the natural outcome of his search for creative inspiration and
meaning.

This thrilling and inspiring book is supplemented with numerous colour
reproductions of Marshall’s landscapes, as well as black-and-white
photographs depicting his travels. Recommended for art lovers, paddlers,
and nature enthusiasts.
