Review

Since the first edition was published in 1910, Canadian Who’s Who
(CWW) has featured the biographies of more than 20,000 Canadians. “The
biographees are chosen on merit alone. Included are outstanding
Canadians from all walks of life: business, academia, politics, sports,
the arts and sciences, in fact from every area of human activity.” The
CWW Editorial Advisory Board consists of Professor Robert Bothwell of
the University of Toronto; Professor Marlene Brant Castellano of Trent
University; writer Bronwyn Drainie; University of Toronto Press
executive editor Virgil Duff; Canadian Who’s Who editor Elizabeth
Lumley; and Lynton Ronald Wilson, Chairman of the Board of CAE Inc. and
Nortel Networks Corporation.

The compact entries (nine per page) provide details about each
biographee (e.g., date and place of birth, education, career
information, present position) and highlight his or her achievements.

The 2003 edition features the Governor General’s Speech in honour of
the Queen’s Jubilee. On October 14, 2002, the Right Honourable
Adrienne Clarkson welcomed her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal
Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to a luncheon in their honour at Rideau
Hall. In her speech, Clarkson spoke of Canada’s “triangular
foundation” on its two founding cultures and its Native peoples. She
praised the conscience and fighting skill of Canadian military men and
women “who have served the cause of international peace and
humanitarianism,” and the skills of our champion athletes, musicians,
writers, astronauts, filmmakers, and jurists. There were representatives
from all these categories at the luncheon.

The CWW is an invaluable bilingual (English/French) resource. The
University of Toronto Press deserves accolades for this substantial
annual contribution to Canadian scholarship, research, and service.
