Review

Originally titled A Practical Guide to Gardening in Canada, this massive
volume first appeared in 1993. A second Canadian edition followed in
2001. This “revised and expanded” edition includes the newest and
latest in the world of horticulture. Far more than a guide, it is an
encyclopedic reference book on all aspects of creating and maintaining
flower, fruit, herb, vegetable, and indoor gardens.

Like its predecessors, this work originated in England and then got
tweaked for markets abroad. Each Canadian edition has had respected
British horticulturist Christopher Brickell as editor-in-chief, and
Trevor Cole, his well-known Canadian counterpart, as editor-in-chief for
Canada. Included are the latest Plant Hardiness Zones of Canada
map—prominently displayed across the inside front and back covers and
flyleaves—and an index of “Canadian Hardiness Zones,” which,
although buried on pages 673–680, is essential for determining the
hardiness of plants mentioned elsewhere in the book.

Even though most of the photographs are of English gardens,
they—along with the helpful text and numerous colour diagrams—make
this a book that could give beginners of any age the confidence they
need to start gardening. It could also inspire experienced gardeners to
try out new plants, ideas, and techniques.
