Review

This superb account of a 1981 Toronto murder and its aftermath rises
well above the sensationalism, tawdriness, and simple exploitation that
has come to typify the true-crime genre. In addition to presenting a
fascinating character study of former undercover Mountie Patrick Kelly,
who was convicted of murder, Harris delves into the operation of several
prominent Canadian institutions, including the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, the Metro Toronto Police, and the banking and legal systems. His
book also uncovers new information that calls into question the grounds
on which Kelly was convicted (although not necessarily the justice of
the final verdict). The book’s one flaw—and it is a serious one—is
an absence of documentation for any of the sources used in its creation.
