Review

Ontario-based Jennifer Bennett is a frequent contributor to gardening
magazines and the author of many gardening books. This latest offering
on low-water gardening—also known as xeriscaping —provides practical
advice for dry-climate gardeners looking to choose the right plant for
the right place rather than fight less-than-ideal conditions.

Dryland Gardening focuses on North American horticultural zones 4
through 7, although some of the drought-resistant plants listed will
surely grow in climates warmer or colder. The book begins with a
discussion of our world’s changing climate, which now favours
adaptable and drought-tolerant plants for the garden. Water
conservation, watering priorities, and setting up watering systems are
also discussed. The bulk of the text is devoted to descriptions of the
plants and is divided into six sections: Herbs, Grasses and
Groundcovers, Bulbs, Perennials and Vines, Annuals, and Shrubs. Other
topics covered include dealing with invasive plants, dealing with trees
under stress, starting bulbs, using mulches, and growing vegetables.

The entries include common and botanical names, information regarding
the size of the plant, recommended zones if applicable, growing tips,
and care and maintenance. Not every plant listed is accompanied by a
photograph, but there are plenty of lush-looking images to inspire any
gardener in a dry area or perhaps those with a dry spot in their yard.
Included is a full-colour horticultural climate zone map of North
America, a list of plant sources and specialty greenhouses (almost all
of which are U.S.-based), a list of useful low-water gardening websites,
and a well-prepared index.

This easy-to-read book is recommended for public and horticultural
libraries with matching horticultural zones.
