Review

Drawn & Quarterly is Canada’s premier publisher of comics and graphic
novels. Since the 1980s, it has consistently published excellent new and
established artists from Canada and beyond, and has helped to develop
the careers of such well-known artists as Chester Brown, Julie Doucet,
Adrian Tomine, David Collier, and Seth. While more mainstream comics
publishers may be known for the series of titles they produce, good
design, content, and production are the Drawn & Quarterly hallmarks.

This collection, the third in a series of anthologies highlighting
emerging comics artists, showcases Drawn & Quarterly’s excellence in
graphic publishing. Featured artists include Geneviиve Castrée, Sammy
Harkham, and Matt Broersma. Montreal-based Castrée’s work is
reminiscent of Julie Doucet, with gentler and cleaner narratives and
drawings. Sammy Harkham evokes the slow days of a teenage girl’s
summer through a muted palette of colours in the story
“Somersaulting.” British Matt Broersma presents an eerie tale of the
ghost of Dr. Martin Frobisher, and his search for his body. This
outstanding book is a must-have for public libraries.
