Review
Good news for anyone with a sweet tooth out there who is craving a daily
sugar fix. Veteran cookbook author Anna Olson has mixed up another batch
of recipes based on her highly popular Food Network cooking program,
Sugar. Olson has already written one cookbook based on the first and
second seasons of the TV series. This book follows in the same
tradition, offering more than 100 recipes gleaned from seasons three and
four.
One of the book’s more interesting facets is that the chapters are
arranged not by a theme ingredient or cooking method, but according to
the colour of the finished product. The book starts off with
“Clear,” then moves on to “White,” “Yellow,” “Orange,”
“Pink,” “Rainbow,” “Golden Brown,” and “Rich Brown.”
Each chapter begins with a few basic recipes virtually any cook can
easily achieve and then throws in one or two “switch ups” that turns
a basic recipe into something more unique. For example, in “Yellow,”
one of the basic recipes is Apple Crumble; the switch-up version is
Apple Crumble Parfait, in which the crumble is served in individual
parfait glasses and topped with apple brandy custard.
In her foreword, Olson acknowledges that many people are intimidated by
baking, but she insists that there is no inherent baking gene required
to turn out great results. It just takes practice. Dozens of scrumptious
photographs are folded into the text to inspire the reader. Whether you
are a nervous beginner making your first muffin or a seasoned home
baker, you will find lots of ideas and inspiration in this imaginative
book.
