Review

This volume is the usual Reader’s Digest mix of commissioned pieces
and excerpted material, most of the latter by journalists such as Ross
Munro. Although its tone is at times self-congratulatory, the book
manages to capture the perception of the participants, or at least those
observing the participants. The focus is on the fighting, and the
experience of fighting, but the home front is not left out. Informative
profiles of Canadian military figures and heroes that combine interviews
and commentary are also included. One regrettable omission are the color
maps that appeared in the original volume. All in all, a useful addition
to the libraries of general readers.
