Review

Eric Hegg went north to Alaska in 1897 as a journeyman photographer. His
travels took him across coastal mountains in midwinter; through
riverside claims; into banks, bars, and bordellos; and down the Yukon
River to the Bering Sea. Whether atop the Chilkoot Pass or on the shores
of Nome, Hegg left for the historical record wonderful images that are
not duplicated elsewhere. One Man’s Gold Rush is a pictorial
documentary of his voyage. Murray Morgan supplies the zestful and
inspired commentary that accompanies the photographs. This updated
edition of the 1967 classic celebrates the centenary of the “North to
Alaska” rush and remains a major contribution to the literature of the
Klondike.
