Nikolai Petrovitch, a wealthy immigrant who operates out of Canada but
has interests in his native Russia, is being watched by the FBI even
before he lands a subcontract to transport Toronto’s garbage to the
United States. Concerned that the Russian mobster intends to smuggle
contraband across the border, the FBI enlists the aide of the RCMP.
After the RCMP comes up empty, the FBI sends John Selby to investigate
not only Petrovitch but also the death of a well-heeled restaurant owner
named Michael Hollis. The car crash that took Hollis’s life appears to
have been an accident, but suspicions arise when Selby discovers a link
between Petrovitch and Hollis.

Set mostly in the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River,
The Border Guards is a violent tale of corruption and betrayal. Many
twists and turns keep the reader engrossed from start to finish, and the
numerous characters are generally well developed, if not always
believable.
