Review

Well-known British Columbia camping writer Jayne Seagrave published the
first edition of this volume in 1997 and has now released the 4th and
5th editions in quick succession. There is not much difference between
these two editions, so campers who own the 4th will probably find that
it still meets their needs. In the 5th edition, Seagrave has added some
new photographs, one new campground, and sections on group camping and
British Columbia Park Administrators.

As she did in earlier editions, Seagrave provides much helpful
information about each of the campgrounds she describes. Each entry
gives location, facilities, recreational activities, and additional
information. In the location section, Seagrave gives basic instructions
for driving to the campsite. The facilities section tells the reader how
many campsites are available and provides qualitative information about
them—whether they are sheltered or open, private or noisy, large or
small. Seagrave also often gives directions to the best sites. The
recreational facilities described include not only those at the site but
also those in nearby towns. The additional information section often
includes history of the local area and a general overall evaluation of
the campground.

One of the most useful parts of the book is Seagrave’s introductory
how-to section. Here she offers practical advice on how to select a
campsite, make a reservation, general rules of camping, potential
hazards, and what to take camping. The advice is specific to British
Columbia, so it will be very helpful to campers who are not experienced
in this part of the country.
