Review

Award-winning author Kevin Callan is the author of several books on
outdoor living, including the bestselling Paddler’s Guide series.
Hailing from Peterborough, Ontario, he is also a regular contributor to
outdoor magazines and often a featured speaker at industry events as one
of North America’s top canoeing experts.

A revised version of a text Callan wrote over 10 years ago entitled
Ways of the Wild, The Happy Camper offers practical advice for planning
your next outdoor adventure. The bulk of the book comprises step-by-step
instructions and checklists for a variety of topics, including buying
camping and paddling gear, planning a day or multi-day trip, choosing
the perfect campsite, camp cooking, bringing along kids and dogs, canoe
and kayak camping, paddling a canoe, cold-weather camping, outdoors
first aid, using a map and compass, and outdoors photography.

The Happy Camper is well organized and replete with full-colour
photographs and other helpful visuals. The author’s down-to-earth and
humorous writing style will appeal to novice and veteran campers alike.
