Review

This book is primarily about how to save money for your child’s
college or university education. The author begins by emphasizing the
value of higher education and discussing what a good education is likely
to cost in the future. He then outlines strategies for securing your
child’s financial future. The benefits of the new Canada Education
Savings Grant are explained (the rules can change, so readers are
advised to consult with a professional for the most up-to-date advice),
and there are strategies for choosing daycares and private/independent
schools. Parents are strongly encouraged to protect their children by
making a will and getting their own financial lives in order. The book
offers basic information on financial advisers (unfortunately, the
addresses of recommended financial planning organizations are not
provided) and tax and estate planning. The last chapter features tips on
teaching children about money. McLean’s well-written text is
accompanied by clearly presented charts and checklists.
