Review

Herbert O’Driscoll has written several books devoted to spiritual
growth and biblical interpretation. Living Scripture is intended to be a
sequel to God with Us. Following the introduction, the text is divided
into eight thematic sections dealing with creativity, leadership,
responsibility, struggling with our humanity, self-discovery,
acknowledging flaws, preserving hope, and lasting friendship. Each
section is given a short introduction, and each chapter within the
section begins with a brief passage from the Bible followed by suggested
further reading. O’Driscoll offers a reflection and application of the
given biblical passage to everyday life, and quoted biblical passages
are cross-referenced with a revised common lectionary at the end of the
book.

The author’s acute awareness and practical approach to scripture are
apparent. Chapters may help in the preparation of church sermons, or
serve as a source of insight and further inquiry for lay people and
clerics alike. Citing such key biblical figures as Moses, Abraham,
Bathsheba, Naomi, the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, and Jesus, Living
Scripture provides inspiration to individuals seeking motivation and
guidance from the Bible. O’Driscoll reveals to the reader that even
notable biblical figures experienced moments of weakness, self-doubt,
and great struggle; however, these same figures were able to persevere
and live exemplary lives that serve as models for us today. According to
O’Driscoll, scripture and well-known biblical characters can teach us
how to live a full life with wisdom and jubilation.

Living Scripture is an uncomplicated and inspirational read.
