Review

According to the authors, “Sports trivia generates lively
conversations and broader discussions, and links people to all aspects
of society: current affairs, lifestyle, culture and history.” Their
book does precisely those things in the context of Atlantic Canada
society.

Sydney Crosbie of Nova Scotia and Therese Brisson of New Brunswick head
a large team of stars with origins in Atlantic Canada, and the list
covers many sports besides hockey. Outstanding men and women from 20
sports are recognized, including boxing, marathon racing, sailing,
football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and rhythmic gymnastics.
Atlantic Canada’s wheelchair and other disabled athletes are
remembered, along with such diverse talents as a famous fly fisherman
and a Triple Crown winner in horse racing.

Eastern athletes broke records and colour barriers, and set winning
streaks in a variety of sports. Several added to their fame with
memorable nicknames, while a smooth, fast talker called the game for
Hockey Night in Canada for a generation of television viewers.

Reading this book will make you forget there’s such a thing as
regional disparity in Canada—not a trivial accomplishment in this era
of competing governments.
