Review

Produced by Canadair Limited in Cartierville, Quebec, the CF–5 was an
adaptation of the Northrup F–5 “Freedom Fighter,” a fighter
aircraft that boasted a simpler design and a lower cost than its
predecessors. The first CF–5 was delivered by Canadair in February
1968. While the Canadian government originally ordered 115 such
aircraft, the order was reduced in 1970 when the Trudeau government
modified its defence priorities. The resulting CF–5 fleet served the
RCAF for some 26 years and would have served longer had there not been
changes in priorities and cutbacks in defence spending. In general, the
CF–5 is remembered as an effective aircraft.

This book relates in tabular form the basic data, delivery date, and
disposal history of each aircraft produced. Subsequent chapters describe
the technical characteristics of the aircraft and are well illustrated
by copious diagrams and colour pictures. Those who are interested in the
historical and technical aspects of military aircraft will find the
volume a useful resource.
