Review

Winter occupies more than half of the prairie gardener’s year, but
many gardeners give up on this season. This marvellous guide shows the
potential beauty of prairie winterscapes, then outlines how to go about
creating them. The plants described are found between the eastern edge
of the Rocky Mountains and Manitoba. The guide includes plant profiles,
design ideas, full projects, and appropriate gardening techniques to
help create one’s own all-season northern prairie garden. The book’s
reference section notes books, CDs, magazine articles, and Internet
sites related to prairie winterscapes.

The text is divided into three parts. The first part covers the
attractions of the prairie winter-scape, with chapters on winter views,
hardscapes, ornamental lighting, great plants for winter, and how to put
it all together. Part 2 focuses on preparations for winter, things to do
inside and out, winter arrangements, the making of containers and
wreaths, and hosting winter visitors in the garden. Part 3, “Plant
Portraits,” illustrates the use of bones, bark, berries, deciduous
trees, shrubs, evergreen conifers, annual seed-heads, valiant vertical
plants, and vines.

The Prairie Winterscape is a treasure trove of information and
inspiring ideas provided by two authors who have loads of experience and
a passion for the prairies.
