Review

David Posen has made a living helping his patients manage stress and
develop healthier lifestyles. Stress is one of those conditions that
most people just accept as part of everyday life without realizing how
damaging it can be if not properly managed.

In this engaging little book, Dr. Posen discusses more than 50
different factors that cause or add to stress. Each two- or three-page
chapter presents a single issue (e.g., holiday stress) and ends with a
“prescription” to make things better. The initial chapters and the
appendixes explain in lay terms what stress is, how it happens
physically and emotionally, what symptoms are indicative of stress, and
potential hazards to avoid. A detailed index concludes the volume.

Dr. Posen uses humour and everyday examples to make the point that each
one of us has the ability to at least control a lot of the stress
factors in our lives. His positive attitude is infectious. He does not
deny the fact that we all need some stress in our lives, but he
emphasizes ways to make the good stress work to our advantage. This is
the type of self-help book that should find its way into every Canadian
home and office.
