Review

Ken Dryden’s 1983 classic The Game is one of the most popular sports
books ever written. It described Dryden’s last year in the NHL,
including his thoughts about his retirement, and his impressions of his
teammates and the NHL as an organization.

This special 20th-anniversary edition adds an insightful new chapter,
“Overtime,” that looks at the game of hockey during its first 100
years, in many ways a very different game than the one Dryden played.
The Game has lost none of its appeal, and Dryden’s new role as a
federal cabinet minister will only heighten interest in his opinions. To
many new readers, the Montreal Canadiens of the 1970s Stanley Cup
dynasty will be only names or vague images from the past. It is
Dryden’s ability to tell appealing stories filled with keen
observations of the social and physical roles of each player that makes
the reader feel as if he or she were a part of the dressing room.

This new edition will introduce a new generation of sports fans to the
ex-goalie. Glimpsing his life, one comes to see Dryden as an
intelligent, observant man who happened to tend goal for a very good
hockey team.
