Review
If you love beef, this handy little beef cookbook offers lots of tasty
new twists and a good selection of recipes for tried-and-true
favourites.
One section in the book outlines how the beef industry handles animal
care, nutrition, and food safety. Another looks at the beef production
chain and environmental stewardship. Questions about buying beef (e.g.,
what cuts of meat are good and for what uses) and cooking beef (e.g.,
when is the meat is done) are addressed, and its nutritional benefits
are described.
The book is divided into “Soups and Salads,” “Ground Beef,”
“Quick Serve Beef,” “Roasts,” “Steaks,” and “Stewing
Beef.” Some of the more unusual offerings are Pomegranate and Citrus
Salad, Caribbean Quick Roast Glazed with Pineapple, and Prairie-Style
Tri-Tip Steaks Marinated in Whiskey. Many recipes, such as Beef and
Portobello Stew, Greek Beef Bruschetta, and Thai Spicy Beef with
Noodles, take eager taste buds on an around-the-world journey. More
traditional fare includes Swiss Steak, Beef Goulash, and Beef and Barley
Soup. There are lots of ideas for quick meals as well as for leisurely
roasts.
Recipe instructions are easy to follow, and most of the recipes are
simple and easy to prepare. And with just one recipe per page, there’s
no annoying flipping of pages to check ingredient amounts. Each recipe
has a per-serving nutritional guide, and some give amounts of particular
nutrients, such as iron, for example.
This attractive cookbook will be useful whether you’re looking for
something for Sunday dinner or something to barbecue after work.
