Review

A good financial plan during one’s student years can mean a happier
and more successful experience while at school and after graduation.
This comprehensive guide provides an overview of all monetary matters of
relevance to Canadian university and college students, and takes a
long-term perspective to fiscal management.

The book begins with an outline of the most important financial
considerations for students as they choose and plan their academic
careers, including the financial implications of attending either a
university or college and the geographic location of the school. The
authors then focus on methods of paying for education, living expenses,
and repayment of student loans. A significant portion of the book
focuses on lifestyle choices students can make to reduce their expenses;
these include suggestions for cheap eating, entertainment, and
accommodation. Finally, the book addresses long-term financial planning,
including managing credit. The information provided covers differences
between individual provinces or cities. The guide concludes with lists
and worksheets to help readers apply the information to their own
situations, as well as references to further resources.

The book is quite text-heavy, and would have benefited from a more
concise or varied presentation of the information. The current format
makes it somewhat difficult to use as a quick reference resource.
Nevertheless, it does contain important information that will help
Canadian students make good short- and long-term financial choices.
