Review

Boyd Warren Chubbs is a Maritime writer whose subjects range from the
landscape to indigenous animal life to characters encountered in daily
Maritime life. In this collection of poetry, Chubbs creates chasms and
pulls the rifts back together. His words deliver a promise of hope and a
sense of grounding often found in the lyrical poetry of Maritimers; at
the same time, his verse has a feel of hardiness, a sense of endurance.

Scattered throughout the pages of the book are pen-and-ink drawings
that reflect both the harshness and the awesome beauty of the Maritime
environment. The author’s note states: “The twelve thematic images
throughout this work are from an exhibition ‘I Make a Covenant with My
Eyes’, drawings based upon selections from the Book of Job.”

The Winter of Remarkable Oranges testifies to Chubbs’s talents as a
poet and an illustrator. He is also a renowned musician who is often
featured on CBC radio programs.
