Review

Vancouver-based Samantha Wilson is the author of Safe Kids, Safe
Families (2005) and the founder of Kidproof Canada, an organization that
trains parents, children, and educators in child and family safety
techniques. Wilson, a former police officer with a focus on crimes
against children, is frequently featured on TV and radio and is an
internationally recognized expert on child safety.

Kidproof Canada offers the popular Babysitter Training Program, a
one-day workshop for kids 11 and older, in communities across Canada.
The course is also available by home study. The Babysitter’s Handbook
is the textbook used for the course. The goal of the book is to help
kids become professional, safe, and in-demand babysitters. Written for
kids, with a brief introduction for parents, the book is designed in a
kid-friendly manner, with sidebars, activities, problem solving, and
illustrations throughout. The text is divided into six sections:
“Becoming a Great Babysitter,” “Preparing for Your Babysitting
Job,” “Having a Successful Babysitting Experience,” “Safety,”
“Abuse, Neglect and Protecting Kids,” and “Babysitter’s First
Aid.” The important first steps of becoming a babysitter are covered
thoroughly and include how to safely find a babysitting job, how much to
charge, and a sample resumé for would-be babysitters. Good advice is
given on how to plan ahead for a babysitting job, and much detail is
provided regarding taking care of and entertaining babies, toddlers, and
school-aged children. Important information regarding the safety of the
children as well as the babysitter is presented.

Each section is followed by a space for notes and a brief quiz to check
for understanding. Also included is a short glossary of terms and
several forms (which can be photocopied) containing questions to ask
potential clients, a babysitter’s log, an emergency phone list, and
various checklists for safety and rules and routines. This unique book
is highly recommended for public and school libraries.
