Pierre and Nicole Martin lend their country home to two young women,
Charlotte, a lawyer, and Johanne, an actress. One October night Johanne
is awakened by an intruder. She is able to escape by breaking a window
and fleeing through the nearby woods. It is thought that the intruder
had hidden in the closet earlier in the evening with the intent of
attacking the young woman. A disturbing psychological drama unfolds as
we witness the impact of this incident on the lives of those who inhabit
the small village outside of Montreal, and wait for the identity of the
intruder to be revealed. Nicole Martin suspects her own husband. Also
under suspicion is Constant, a handyman who has always been treated as
an outsider by the locals. Dr. Aubert, a neighbor of the Martins,
questions the very existence of the man in the closet: is he real or a
product of Johanne’s dark imagination? Barry Tremblay, a journalist
who writes for the local paper, sees the intruder as a means to that
“big story” that will land him a job with a large urban newspaper. A
surprise ending concludes this disquieting, thoughtful mystery.
