In the early 21st century, the King of England and his family are
assassinated, ostensibly by the IRA. It is the responsibility of the
late king’s personal equerry and friend, and also head of security, to
secure the throne for his successor and to bring the assassins to
justice. His mission is complicated by the fact that the heir to the
throne is an illegitimate Australian playboy–actor who is unaware of
his connection to the royal family. When he is persuaded to accept his
destiny as monarch, he in turn becomes the target for assassination. The
author weaves a complex plot full of intrigue and suspense. Far from
being a simple IRA terrorist attack, the systematic destruction of the
royal family is the first step in a conspiracy involving supposedly
loyal Britons at the top levels of government.
Although much detail is lavished on the intricacies of 21st-century
communications and warfare in this gripping thriller, characterization
and plot are not sacrificed to technology. The characters are
three-dimensional and believable, and the plot does not spiral into
fantasy techno-realms, but remains anchored in a plausible, near-future
scenario.
