Review

While backpacking, canoeing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are
all covered in Lightweight Camping, the book’s primary focus is on
offering two things: current technical information on outdoor
clothing/equipment; and practical advice that emphasizes knowledge and
safety.

Separate chapters are devoted to map and compass use, survival skills,
emergency care, food, clothing, and basic equipment choices for all four
seasons. There is balanced, detailed consideration of both high-tech and
traditional gear. The final chapter provides information on 25 North
American trip routes, 18 of which are Canadian. Accompanying each trip
are a small black-and-white photo and contact addresses.

The book is accessible and graphically rich (wide margins accommodate
sidebar illustrations and tips). Because it serves a wide variety of
outdoor information needs, it would be a good choice for libraries with
limited budgets. The author is an educator and wildlife photographer
with more than 30 years of wilderness travel experience throughout North
America.
