Review

With this work, Richards returns to the same fictional community in the
Miramichi region of New Brunswick that he made known to readers of the
previous two titles in the trilogy, Nights Below Station Street and
Evening Snow Will Bring Such Peace. This volume centres on the fate of a
previously unknown character, Jerry Bines, a man both feared and admired
by those whose lives he touches. A progression of events in this novel
leads to an inevitable tragedy in which Bines is implicated. Tough yet
gentle, scheming yet spontaneous, Bines is a study in contrasts. Despite
the meanness of his circumstances, he achieves a certain heroism and
dignity. Once again, Richards challenges his readers to make sense of a
character who defies glib labels.
