Review
Brian Moore’s latest novel takes place on a Caribbean island. A
priest, who works in a private boy’s school serving the mulatto elite,
adopts a foundling black child, Jeannot, into the religious community.
Jeannot later achieves distinction in the political arena as
priest/president of the country. The social upheaval following his
election gives rise to complex and unanswerable questions. Is the young
idealist a messiah or a force of social destruction? The author, twice a
Governor General’s Award winner, has produced a powerful study of a
world governed—as in life—by moral ambiguity.
