Review

Vancouver: The Ultimate Guide is the best one-volume presentation of the
city this reviewer has encountered. It is compact, loaded with facts and
suggestions, and caters to tourists and residents with varying tastes
and disposable incomes. As a native and 25-year resident of the city, I
would recommend the book to my Vancouver friends and to tourists without
hesitation.

Well-organized chapters provide easy access to highlights in the table
of contents. The index is extensive and allows the reader to pinpoint
sights and activities as diverse as The Girl in a Wet Suit (a statue in
Stanley Park) and 13 hiking areas within a short drive of downtown
Vancouver. Of particular interest in the B.C. Ferries (travel) section
of the guide is the inset containing information about possible whale
sightings by passengers on the ferries. Included is a table of
dorsal-fin profiles of the most prominent species, in case you have the
good fortune to spot whales.

There is a brief but informative historical section at the beginning of
the Guide. Maps are numerous and easy to use. The book does a wonderful
job of highlighting less-well-known hotels within the city for visitors
who want something besides the standard four-star downtown
accommodation.
