Review

This revised and updated bibliography is a vital reference tool for
students of Canadian theatre history. This update adds the years
1977–84, and there are more than three times as many entries as
appeared in the original volume. The addition of material to the initial
bibliography, plus the promise of a supplement for 1985–95 projected
as forthcoming in 1996, will certainly ensure that this work will be
used for many years to come. Fifteen sections are categorized by
“chronological, geographical, linguistic and thematic bases,” and
include such headings as General Works, History to 1900, Twentieth
Century, Festivals, Drama in Education, and Radio & Television Drama.

The years since 1984 have been filled with activity, and, happily,
publication possibilities in the shape of journals, magazines, and books
have chronicled this growth. The welcome fact that plays produced,
written, or directed by Canadians of color and/or by women have
increased will certainly be reflected in the 1996 supplement (hopefully
not marginalized in chapters of their own, but rather integrated into
the main body of the work). A section on the growing hybrid of
dance–theatre and its overlap into image theatre might also provide a
useful guide to students of form, genre, and developing styles.
