Review

This is the fifth annual volume of The Canadian Obituary Record, a most
useful reference tool for journalists, researchers, archivists, and
librarians. Here are obituaries on almost 500 important Canadians who
died in 1992, along with careful indexing that, for example, would let a
user readily discover an Orillia-born philanthropist or a Medicine Hat
dentist. Equally important, the compiler, Robert Stamp, is a historian,
with that breed’s instinctive care and concern for fact. The
volume’s utility is further enhanced by a cumulative five-year index.
Any reader, therefore, interested in TV journalist Barbara Frum could
find here a one-page obituary that provides the dates of her birth and
death, the highlights of her career, and an assessment of her
importance. What more could one ask of such a volume?
