Review

Captain Kosta Konstatinou of the Athens police force is sent to the
island of Nostos to solve the murder of George Papas, a wealthy
58-year-old Greek who led a life of apparent idleness. Among the
numerous suspects are Effie, George’s young wife; Joan Brooks, an
unsuccessful poet; and Ravi Rajan and his wife, Mandy, whose 13-year-old
daughter was seduced by George. The sheer number of suspects does not
allow for character development. The brooding, hardboiled Kosta is the
only character to come across as more than paper-thin. This average
mystery exhibits a high level of suspense only toward the end. The
abrupt and ambiguous conclusion leaves Kosta’s survival an open
question.
